RSPO Certification

"The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative on sustainable palm oil. Members and participants in its activities come from many different backgrounds and include environmental NGOs, banks and investors, growers, processors, manufacturers and retailers of palm oil products and social NGOs. They come from many countries that produce or use palm oil. The principal objective of the RSPO is “to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil through co-operation within the supply chain and open dialogue between its stakeholders.

The RSPO Supply Chain Certification

RSPO Supply Chain Standard, which describes requirements related to the control of RSPO certified palm, palm derivatives and palm products along the supply chain, including flows of material and associated claims. The RSPO Supply Chain Standard is presented as a series of auditable requirements designed to be used by organisations in the palm value chain to demonstrate implemented systems for control of RSPO certified oil palm products. Downstream processors or users of RSPO certified sustainable oil palm products can claim the use of (or support of) RSPO certified oil palm products when they adhere to the requirements the RSPO Supply Chain Standard and this is independently verified by an RSPO approved and accredited certification body.

Facilities will be assessed for certification once every five years, and if certified, will be annually assessed for continued compliance. After five years the main assessment will be repeated. Details are provided in the RSPO Supply Chain Certification System document.

The RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C) for Sustainable Palm Oil Production

The RSPO Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Palm Oil Production (Including Indicators and Guidance; revised April 2013) are the global guidelines for producing palm oil sustainably. They have been described as the world's toughest standards for sustainable agriculture production and have been variously adapted for other crops. No public claims relating to sustainable palm oil production, to the RSPO P & C, can be made without RSPO approved third party inspection." The unit certification for RSPO P&C Certification is the mill and its supply bases (Growers). Growers will be assessed for certification once every five years, and if certified, will be annually assessed for continued compliance. After five years the main assessment will be repeated. Details are provided in the RSPO Certification Systems document. The objective of these detailed requirements is to ensure that RSPO assessments are carried out with objectivity and consistency, together with the required levels of technical rigour and stakeholder credibility. RSPO producer members interested to be RSPO certified as sustainable palm oil producers need to engage a RSPO approved certification body for such certification.
